Fiona Friday:Words Every Child Has a Right to Know
A Very full amazing day! Lot’s of UW. Began with a lovely walk with a good friend at the wetlands of the UW horticultural Center. Eagles, lots of ducks etc and Mt. Rainier… Will do a flickr set tomorrow as it was so fine… We popped into the library there to see an exhibition of artist Lou Cabeen, painter, book and fabric artist who had books of plant drawings ( a meditation on toxicity) and stitching AND on the librarians desk, this box of cards ..Words Every Child Has a Right to Know..Well after the harangue about the words being lost from the children’s dictionary in the UK and my blip 2 days ago, I couldn’t help but exclaim, The Lost Words! to which the librarian says yes, we have that BOOK which she proceeded to get. And yes, this artist was responding to the nature words exclusion. Don’t you just love things coming together like this.?
Well it WAS Fiona Friday, so we picked her up from school, went to the Henry Gallery on the UW Campus to have a snack in the cafe and see one show we hadn’t seen before ..Edgar Arceneaux: a cabin with a labyrinth of sorts, mirrors and BOOKS (link Here) See my other journal for pix. The real goal was a BOOK illustration exhibit in the Allen library there exploring graphic methods of print and image with examples from the 1600s to many contemporary artist books. Fiona still wants to be a writer and illustrator so she was interested. when we got home we had a good look at “The Lost Words” which she hadn’t seen yet…she was astounded to learn the reason the book was made. Lots of talk about words and nature. Big impression.
We did a little work on our" Favorite things" BOOk , then she had to build the train tracks, then dinner and after we took her home at 8:00m, H and I went to Nik’s Basketball game at 8:30. Whew, I’m ready for bed! but what a satisfying and varied day it was!
The other photos show The view of Mt Rainier from the library, And the statue of George Washington. It was a UW day...love to live so close. (sorry this is so long tho..)
