Shackleton's Journey

These prints have hung in our dining room for a while now. Gordon was fascinated by the story of Shackelton’s journey and the way in which he and his crew managed to survive crossing the frozen heart of Antartica despite their ship being entrapped in ice. And how photos also amazingly survived. We saw an exhibition of the photos in London and I later gave him one of these as a present. He bought the other one when he went to another exhibition and I am persuading him to get another, as three always looks better than two. So he is currently having fun choosing one to tell more of the story. 

As they are in the dining room, they have over the years been a source of great interest by the grandchildren and I have witnessed many a breakfast time where they have been listening very carefully to their grandad telling them all about them. Even now, when they know just about as much as he does, they still talk about them and ask questions. 

So whilst we were in Waterstones, looking for Christmas books, Gordon was delighted to find a wonderful book Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill. It tells the story and is beautifully illustrated with drawings based on the photos (as you can see in the extra). I noticed that the book had been awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal for book illustration in 2015. He bought the book and was going to give it to one of the grandchildren, but I knew he did not really want to give it away and we decided it was much better to keep it here, so he can share it with them when they visit. 
 
I am not attempting to tell the story here, because  I don’t listen as carefully as the children do it’s easy for anyone interested to look it up. Here is a brief version.
