Gods & Monsters

My Dear Fellows & Dear Princess,

It may have been sunny and Spring-like outside, but in my head it is all cobwebby with flashes of ominous lightning and a squeaky bat flapping about.

Bats in old horror films are always a bit useless, aren't they? Dangling from bits of fishing line and just sort of hanging about.

Nevertheless I just love all this stuff. It reminds me of being cosy in pyjamas, and eating buttery toast in front of a roaring fire with a cup of tea.

In order to recreate a bit of atmosphere, I put "Sleepy Hollow" on the projector tonight and watched it like I was at the pictures. I love "Sleepy Hollow", it is probably one of my most favouritest-ever films. It's partially because of Johnny Depp's twitchy, cowardly performance, partially because there's actually a whodunnit at the heart of it all, but mainly I just love the fog-laden atmosphere of it.

After that, "Son of Frankenstein" went on. It's the third of the Universal Frankenstein films, and the last one where Boris Karloff played the monster. It's generally considered not as good as the others, but I like it a lot. It has a lot of humour in it, Basil Rathbone in the title part and Bela Lugosi pops up as well as a scheming sidekick.

Having watched these, I reckon I will have done Halloween proud and can ready myself for Summer in New Zealand. It still feels weird saying that though.
