Last day of the Indian summer

Off to the chemist for a flu jab this morning, followed by a leisurely walk round Swaddywell Pit where I'd hoped I might see some of the tree sparrows that had been spotted in the last few days. Of course, there were none present while I was there.

It was a balmy 16C and there were still a few insects on the wing, including several small copper butterflies, a small white and quite a few common darter dragonflies. I spent some time near the pond watching five pairs of dragonflies busy ovipositing, making the most of the fine weather. Their life cycle may be rapidly truncated as cold weather is due to arrive tomorrow.
