Eight Grey Herons in Flight ...
... captured from a high cliff overlooking Castellamare del Golfo, on a day-long drive with our bird tour group to our new base near the west coast of Sicily. The extra is the best bird of the day: a Bonelli's Eagle--rare and one of the most endangered raptors in Europe (though not threatened globally). Both subjects were very distant--hence the poor quality of the images.
We drove west, mainly along the coast, from Polizzi Generosa back through Palermo to a hotel near the small town of Custonaci (east of Trapani); we'll stay for the next five nights. It was warm and humid, with good birds at the overlook stop (where we had about 90 minutes to go). The Bonelli's came later.
