St John's Church (Methodist)
Built of Kauri (I presume) the church was built on the Ponsonby Ridge, beside Ponsonby Road in 1881 - 1882. The tall steeple at the northwest corner is original, as are the majority of the features of the church. It opened for worship on 30 April 1882. Two of the six opening services were conducted by Rev Spurgeon of the Baptist Tabernacle and Rev Robertson, who was based in St Stephens Presbyterian Church in Jervois Road. The church was built for and has remained part of the Methodist (Wesleyan) community.
On my way home along Ponsonby Road this evening, after a day at the CMHC in Three Lamps, my attention was drawn by the golden sunlight on the church.
