Causeway

Much of  the history of Redbridge on the western fringes of Southampton  is linked to its position at the tidal part of the River Test. Not surprisingly there are bridges which both now and in the past have formed a causeway across the river for both road and rail.

Once it was also the terminus of a canal north to Andover.

The oldest bridge was constructed in Medieval times with five arches reckoned to have been built in the early 1700's and a second bridge built in 1793.

Today they lie alongside  both the main highway and railway bridges leading to the New Forest and the West Country, and are closed to traffic..But it is still a favoured beauty spot by the river estuary.
