Rooted, Revived, Reinvented...
Terrific exhibition of ancient and contemporary baskets at the Whatcom Museumin Bellingham. In the photo above, this basket was made from black ash, pine needles, and porcupine quills. Connections took me to this exhibit and we had a wonderful time.
The extras show two baskets: The one with the rebar is called "Bring Back Our Girls". The artist used steel, paper, and vinyl around a rebar frame. The exterior is printed with posts from the #bringbackourgirls Facebook pate, and the interior presents photos of the kidnapped girls.
The second basket is called Brendan Basket # 309, utilized stainless steel cable and walnut-stained reed in a continuous spiral weave. Brenda is a German boy's name and translates to "flame". The artist Carole, Hetzel, created a basket that resembles a nuclear explosion.
