Old Exeter Bridge
I took this shot from the bus as I travelled around the ring road from the centre of Exeter. It show the old medieval bridge across the River Exe. There is no river running through there now as the shape of the river has changed substantially. The bridge is thought to have been built in 1190 being the first stone bridge across the river. At the time the river was tidal with a very large flood plain and there were thought to be 17 or 18 arches some with timber framed houses attached. Today all that remains are a stretch of 8 and a half arches and the remains of St Edmunds church, (see extra). It is also unknown why some of the arches are round and the other arched. Fascinating, I really must go back and take some proper shots.
