Last autumn a 7 foot unicorn appeared in Dalkeith Park. The willow sculpture made by Woody Fox originally stood in an artland in Sanquhar in south west Scotland and was commissioned to mark National Unicorn Day on April 9th. (I’d never heard of this) Since the 14th century the mythical unicorn has been Scotland’s national animal as a symbol of nobility and power and can be seen adorning coats of arms, flags and stonework in many places. The ancient Persians, Romans, Greeks and Celts mentioned unicorns and were often described as an elegant white horse-like creature with a single horn capable of magical properties.
The morning’s snow has now given way to sleety rain and a slow thaw is forecast so perhaps we might manage to get our car down the icy road tomorrow.
