Funchal - art and memories.

Following the terrible disaster of February 20th 2010, there was a special project which funded art in the Old Town, in particular, Rua Santa Maria.

With the flooding and the mudslides, this area was very badly affected, but the locals just set about cleaning, clearing, and getting back in business. There were many deaths, including a lot of people in the shopping centre and the event is commemorated each year. It was a very difficult time and I will certainly never forget. (I blipped a screenshot of the local tv, but I can’t link directly on my iPad, I’m afraid, but you could track it down. )

The doors are extremely varied, some tasteful, some just chaotic, some simply wonderful. They have been moved around, added to, replaced and adapted over the years, but I’m blipping three of the original ones here and in extras.

This blip is dedicated to the people of Madeira on the 8th anniversary of the tragedy.
