Dad's Army

The young man on the left of the picture is my father at (I think) the time of joining the army as a boy musician (794352) at the age of 14.

He began his career as a player (trombone) initially on horseback in the Royal Artillery Mounted Band...long since defunct, but went on to become a bandmaster and served across the world in that capacity - taking my mother and me with him on his overseas postings.

After he retired from the army he became a peripatetic (or in his words, a "very pathetic") music teacher at schools around Yorkshire, and was instrumental (pun intended) in the creation of bands in the area as well.

All I can play is the fool...which must have been a great sadness to him!
