Book Title of the Day

My Dear Fellows & Dear Princess,

Don't you love second hand book shops? You are far more likely to find something interesting in there, something pre-loved* and eccentric.

I ventured into Arty Bee's bookshop on Manners Street today. I've popped in there before but today I had a chance to really take a good look around. I saw a good number of books I would like to buy, but I really need to read the ones I already HAVE first.

It is hard to be disciplined about these things, but fortunately I have Er Indoors around to pick up unread books, look at me over the top of her glasses and sigh.

Today I saw some really great titles and illustrations. Especially the old volumes. The story of King Carlos the Mad, for example. I nearly picked that up, but I already have enough old books about Habsburg rulers to read. Actually I have enough books about Habsburg rulers to wallpaper the interior of our house.

There was also a book entitled "Brave Tales of Daring Deeds Etc Illustrated". And sure enough there was a picture of a man with a spear on the spine of the book. I wonder what the stories were? And was the man with a spear the hero or the villain?

And then there was the book pictured in today's blip. It is clearly meant for larfs, but I like it anyway. The cat in the picture looks so INTENT and filled with passion. Like Tony Hart with a tail.

Perusing bookshops is like looking around a free museum. And second hand bookshops even more so. There's a warmth and a friendliness to old books. When we eventually buy a place of our own I shall buy a bookshelf and it will look something like this.

Pending Er Indoors approval, of course.

* Which is why you should never buy back issues of "Playboy". But that is quite another matter and not one for the pages of this website.
