community of gardens..magpie bench
This morning at 10ish, about 40 residents of our street ( and a few hangers-ons!) met to walk through some of the street's gardens.
Not just about the gardens but the people who live here, and the' mob' ranged from a babe in arms to a very elegant 90+ neighbour who weeds and prunes on a weekly basis and keeps us all on our less elderly toes.
There is a lily lined creek and stone bridges, veggie gardens that are the centrepiece and fence lines with espaliered apples and peaches underplanted with cabbages, broccoli and Chinese greens.
Glossy, black free ranging chickens and equally free ranging mallards.
Cubbies that overlook ponds, are surrounded by fairy toadstools and tower in trees designed as a pirate ship.
A pocket of citrus trees and a gifted pot of marmalade.
Beds of self seeding poppies and heritage roses.
A native bee swarm hanging in a eucalypt, now so established the honeycomb 'gills' are visible through the, possibly, million bees...
..and M's garden of mosaicked paths and benches, rainbow chard and carved totems reflecting his Sioux ancestry.
All this followed by a barbie in D and R's beautiful garden, lunching on the lawn or beneath the wisteria covered pergola.
A perfect Sunday ramble, and in our own back yards.
