Gillipaw's Journal

By Gillipaw

Speke Hall, Liverpool

A rare Tudor timber-framed Manor House. Restored in the 19th century, with beautiful Victorian Arts and Crafts movement features. Wallhangings by William Morris. Whistler and Rossetti were regular visitors. It is thought Whistler painted "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1" here in 1871, more commonly known as "Whistler's Mother".

We enjoyed a tour of the house, and central courtyard, finding ancient Yew Trees, impressive wood carvings, an Eavesdropper Hole, and a very well hidden Priest Hole.

We had hoped to walk in the grounds, but Storm Brian was brewing, and the property closed early.

Passing by John Lennon airport immediately next to the Hall, I liked the quote on the road sign "Above us only Sky." That made me smile.

A very difficult journey home. Strong winds, and torrential rain. The motorways were busy right up to the Scottish Border. Glad to be home to relative calm.
