Historic Monument

It’s the iconic focal point in Southampton’s city centre  the historic Bargate which has been an  important attribute to the population.
It has commanded its strategic position since Norman times when it was constructed as the main gateway to the walled city.  Parts of the city walls, like the magnificent Bargate still exist centuries on from when it was built in the 12th century although parts have been added.

At one time it was headquarters for the city’s police force, and also served as a prison.  In modern times it is preserved as a striking monument and has served as an exhibition space for one of the city’s two universities.
