Göta Kanal & Lake Roxen

We decided to go for an outing to the canal today. So we packed a picnic and headed out to the Carl Johan locks at Berg along the Göta canal. This was an outing that all 4 of us had enjoyed on the first full day of our visit last year. I really love canals and watching boats going through locks so it was on my list of places I'd like to return to. The Carl Johan locks are a flight of 7 locks and is the main tourist attraction on the canal. There is a basin at the top of the flight with another two locks beyond that. At the bottom of the flight is Lake Roxen. Last year it was a sunny day and we enjoyed a picnic by the locks with ice cream afterwards.

Today it was more chilly, windy and grey, but with some sunshine too. We watched some boats and then sat by Lake Roxen at the bottom and had our picnic. This was a Danish boat that came across the lake, ready to climb the flight of locks. Soon after this it started to rain so we gathered our things quickly and headed back up the hill to the car. We got quite wet and decided to abandon any thought of ice cream.

On the way home we stopped to pick up a few food items. I love visiting supermarkets in other countries so I got excited about that! Simple pleasures! Then we went to visit Elisabet's parents later this afternoon for 'Fika' (coffee and 'a little something' - normally cake). Elisabet's mum had made the most delicious carrot cake from a recipe from a famous bakery in Stockholm. It's the best I've had in a long while. Her parents were very sorry about Dolly as they'd met her last year and were looking forward to seeing her again. So much kindness.

See extra pictures for the canal, watching the boat come in, and Fika time.
