Day 6

Day 6. Monmouth to Clun

Mr PB kept telling me this would be an easy day with only 52 miles of cycling, technically it was. We left Monmouth in the rain, fortunately this soon dried up and the day became quite sunny and warm.

We started by climbing out of Monmouth, and I do mean climb, then it was rolling countryside through the Welsh Marches, stopping in Hereford for tea, then on familiar roads after our May holiday there, onto the Shropshire hills. We had another tea stop in Kingsland and then on to Clun. There was a massive climb at the end of the day, probably our toughest yet.

Mr PB saw this sign on the road and we had to stop. The mileage is not the same as ours, but we couldn't resist the opportunity.

We are staying at the youth hostel which has some history, I quote
Clun Mill located to the north of the town is nicknamed the "malevolent mill" on account of numerous deaths having been recorded there and occupants disappearing after purchasing it. Last used around 1920, it opened as a youth hostel in 1932. In 1974 the freehold was purchased by the Youth Hostel Association

It's very quirky and the male and female dorms are separated by the original mill machinery. We bought some food and cooked a meal, then cycled back into the village for a delicious pint of local beer.
