There be a Bear in them Woods!
Back Blip
Day 9 of our trip to Vancouver and Alaska.
We started the day watching a little talk on Whales in the theatre. She was amusing but not particularly knowledgeable. She did show a picture of the Northern Lights though and thats the closest thing we saw to them, sadly. But I can't grumble. The trip has been fantastic.
After sort of joining in on a 'Name that Tune' quiz from the 80's (which I won out of the 4 of us!) we docked in Ketchikan, the Salmon Fishing capital of the world. And the port where our ship crashed into the dock last year causing 3 million dollars worth of damage!!! Ooops!
We hadn't booked a day trip as the ships prices were quite high so I took a risk and chose to book something on shore. We found a nice little independent chappie who arranged a mini bus for just the 4 of us to do a little wildlife tour. Kathy was our guide who was quite amusing. She took us to a well known Bear spotting hangout called Herring Creek where we stood and waited for about half an hour. A black bear did then appear from the woods but it was quite far off. We didnt get a good look but at least we saw one. She then stopped somewhere for us to look at (another) bald eagle and a waterfall. Not quite worth the $48 each but it was a little trip out and quite good fun.
After a little mooch around the shops and a stop at the local Police Station for Mr W to buy a badge (they didnt have one) we got back on board and stuffed ourselves silly - again!!!
I then spotted a bald eagle lift a salmon out the water, closely followed by an older bird who took it off him! You can see the old bird upside down in my extras if you look closely enough!!!!
