A Sad Squirrel Saga
I would love to say that this is my new backyard pet squirrel, and that I have taught the animal SEVERAL different tricks. But, that's not true.
I took a picture of the prone squirrel, and was deciding...as I circled the pond...how I was going to dispose of it. I was sure it was dead. But, upon returning...I saw its head move. What now?
I walked to the police station, and asked if they had a procedure in place to care for a hurt animal. They said no, but that they would call the DPW. (The Department of Public Works.) I returned to the animal, and finally saw its problem. Both back legs were bloody and mangled.
I called 2 different animal rescue shelters. One said they could do nothing, and the other wanted me to leave a message. I waited for the DPW guy, and he finally showed.
Me: "You got anything to capture this thing with?"
Him: "What do you mean capture...they told me it was dead."
The man didn't have anything to capture it with, and he thought we were going to have to let Nature take its course. After 2 hours and 23 minutes...I left for home.
Part of me wants to go back, and do one of two things.
1. Put the poor thing out of its misery.
2. Somehow capture it, and see if it could possibly recover.
The problem with #2? It is against the law to take in a wild animal. I think it is a 5 hundred dollar fine. I just hate to see animals suffer. ;0(
