Local heroes?

This extraordinary statue of traditionally dressed Cretan men forming a pillar stands at the heart of s tiny village in the foothills of the White Mountans of Crete. A quick trip up there this afternoon reminded us the the sunny coastline is only half the story of this remarkable island. On the Omalos Plateau the temperature was 11c - it was 22 on the coast.

And the road - rockfalls and all - makes the A83 look like a walk in the park ...
