Two steps forward...

I remember when I worked at National Power in 1991 and I was struggling with my weight. The fact I played squash every lunchtime was making no difference and I embarked on a daft fad diet where by you had to wait for an hour after eating any fruit before eating anything else, and for three hours after that before you could eat fruit again. This odd assumption that one wouldn't consider simply omitting fruit from one's diet was taken as read and, actually, it worked (presumably because of the hours spent not eating).

After that, when I put weight back on, I didn't fancy using that method again and I always struggled to find the right diet until just after Dan was born, when his mother and I embarked on WeightWatchers, which worked like a charm but wasn't sustainable (for me) once the weight was gone. For the last few years, low-carbing has worked well for me on the occasions when I stick to it but it's not that easy when you don't have a routine.

This year, I've been counting calories, which is actually quite easy when you have an app for it. And part of the ease of it is that it becomes obvious why the weight is not falling off as quickly as planned; I regularly take in too many calories. This year I've lost 5.5kgs (twelve pounds), although a lot of that was in the first two weeks, to be honest. Still, today I was pretty pleased with my progress.

And also a bit frustrated because I know that's going to go to pot this week. Tonight, the Minx and I ate with my friend Bob, his wife, Michaela, and two of their kids, who are spending a couple of days in Kirkby Lonsdale. It was a lovely evening and the calorie counting stopped shortly after the first glass of wine, to be honest, as I guessed it would. All the same, I walked to Asda at lunchtime, going along Natland Mill Beck Lane, as usual. Here's a view of the beck, framed by a hole in the bridge.
