This is Straight!
We flew from Campeche to Mexico City this morning in readiness for the long haul back to UK tomorrow evening. We have allowed a little more time here to catch a few more sights of MC and a breathing space between air travel.
We took the subway over to Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe - a huge Catholic establishment with several churches and an enormous new circular church as well as the old one. Being an engineer, John was particularly interested in the structures and how they have been affected by subsidence. The old original church would not have had any additional piling support and so has gradually slipped down into the ground, leaning at all sorts of strange angles. The main point of reference is a new concrete wall which is straight, so I lined up this wall with the bottom of my viewfinder to show the leaning of the other walls!. All this natural sinking would not have been helped by the earthquake a few years back, and John doesn't rate its chances in any future quakes. His advice is, at the first rumble or tremour get out quickly!!
Tomorrow we have the whole day here as our flight is not until 9pm. A leisurely breakfast, a couple of museums and a late lunch before heading to the airport should end the holiday nicely!
