Masca valley in Tenerife
Today was a very nice day. We went out in our rental car and drove to the north-western part of the island. First stop was in Santiago del Teide, where we visited a museum dedicated to the last volcanic eruption in Teneriefe (in 1909). It was very informative, and interesting to read about how the lava closed the road to the village and people used doves to get messages to the next village.
We hadn't planned what to do next, but now we were so close to Masca, we decided to drive there. The road is very narrow and crooked, downhill to the village, but everybody drives very carefully so that's not a problem. We stopped at a viewpoint (where I took the photo of the day), but couldn't get a parking space in the small village, so we just drove through and up the road on the other side of the valley. There was a restaurant on the top of the hill, with a stunning view, and we had a nice tapas there. Then we continued our trip, and next stop was in Garachico. We were lucky and got a parking space, so we wandered around the town (we mostly looked at the natural swimmingpools (made of lava) down by the sea.
After a cup of coffee and a nice cake, we went back to our car and started the drive home again. But we didn't take the same road as in the morning, but instead drove through the El Teide national park (from the northwestern side). It was absolutely beautiful up there! All the trees growing in the lava, and then this stunning sunset above the clouds. It was a perfect ending to our day trip.
