Fabulous Weekend
Spend the weekend in Edinburgh staying with youngest son S and his girlfriend C. They live in a lovely flat in Leith and their local knowledge was greatly appreciated in getting us around during the festival.
Friday evening started with a splendid pub meal in the Kings Wark on the Shore, made even better by S paying for it! We then headed to the Castle for the Military Tattoo, which was simply stunning and has to be one of the best spectacles in Scotland. A warm and dry evening helped make it that little bit special.
Saturday was spent touring the festival and attending comedy shows. Strange thing was the pick of the Fringe, which S had paid for, was the poorest of the three, with the 2 free shows being much better. My favourite was the stand up comedians in the White Horse in the Royal Mile. You just had to forget about the searing heat and disregard for health and safety (one door leading down a passage to a back room crammed with about fifty people and no other exit!!). We sat only a few feet away from the comedians and got picked on for a bit of audience participation. It was great fun and our sides were sore with laughter. We finished the evening off with a lovely Chinese meal before heading for the third comedy show in Jekyll and Hyde in Hanover Street, which was also good.
When we returned to the flat it was time for Mrs B to open her birthday presents and for the boys to have a a wee nightcap from a bottle of special 12 year old whisky.
Sunday morning was a delight with the sun splitting the sky and S cooking Mrs B and me scrambled eggs with smoke salmon. What a great start to the day, which set us up for a walk to the top of Arthur's Seat where the views over the city were quite breathtaking. We returned to the Shore in Leith where C suggested we go to Mimi's Bakehouse for lunch. The food and coffees were out of this world. My fruit scone with raspberry jam and clotted cream was heavenly, even if a bit heavy on the cholesterol!
Thank you S & C for a fabulous weekend, which was greatly appreciated and will be long remembered!
