Rebirth

We had an appointment downtown this afternoon, after which HH headed home and I caught the camera repair shop just as it was closing. Heaven knows when I’ll get the Nikon back, and with the frontal part of the long lens for the Sony missing, Blip life is frustrating just now (and this on the first day of the new membership).

From there, I took the new tram up to the revitalized port area, and it’s just lovely. Absolutely unrecognizable as the dirty, dangerous square and road system overshadowed by a long and hideous viaduct and clogged with traffic. It’s now a pedestrian area and on a warm and sunny evening at around 5.30 p.m, there were people relaxing, families visiting the Museums, street artists preparing their act – mostly on stilts – and children and adults climbing onto the giant letters that spell out “Olympic City”. I was glad to have waited till now to get a good look at it – as a key part of the Olympic Boulevard, it would have been thronged with people during and just after the Olympics, with shows, food trucks and giant screens.

Whatever other things our former mayor may have got wrong, the rethinking of this area isn’t one of them. I think Barrioboy and digitaldaze will approve.
