White Elephant Days
Today was the culmination of the three-day White Elephant Fair. It's a huge thing here in Green Valley. There was a giant, fantastic parade. I think it's the largest one in all of southern Arizona (with the exception of the Tucson Rodeo parade). It lasts about two hours.
You might think this is a pretty odd name for a fair and parade. (It is.) It is named after the White Elephant store. It's a humongous place, as big as a warehouse, where you can get a shirt for 50¢ or a sofa for $10. There are three things about the White Elephant which makes it special:
1. The place is run by hundreds of volunteers (only 2 paid staff, I think);
2. Everything there is donated. It is a charity so donations are tax-deductible;
3. They donate MILLIONS of dollars each year, ranging from the food banks, schools, volunteer organizations, scouts...
I didn't buy any (cowboy corn) kettle corn from this mechanical clown even though it was cool the way he/she/it was waving that sign around. I put up a couple of extras so you can get a bit of the flavor of the event.
