The Volunteers
At the Democratic Club table during the White Elephant Country Fair days in Green Valley, Arizona.
This morning Claudette is hastily preparing the candidate petition clipboards for volunteers who will be coming to sit at the tables in shifts throughout the four days of the fair. They will assist people who want to change their registration so that they can vote in the presidential preference election in March (we don't call it a primary) or who stop by to meet a candidate, pick up material or sign a petition.
Quite a cast of characters will pass by over the course of the weekend. There will be Republicans who will either engage in spirited, opposition discussions or those who are so afraid of making eye contact with a democrat they are willing to walk all the way into the parking lot.
Then there are those who stop to talk politics with like-minded people since there are not that many "of their kind" in their world.* They are excited to be able to engage in a spirited, political, non-confrontational conversation.
It's a fun time for everyone for as long as it lasts.
Today I pay homage to THE VOLUNTEERS.
*Green Valley is a little red dot swimming in a sea of the blue County of Pima. The blue County of Pima the is sucked into the red abyss of the state of Arizona.
