Down in the Forest

Meet just a few of the locals you find in the New Forest and the adjoining common land which falls within the boundaries of the National Park.
They reckon there are about 3,000 ponies in the Forest and are part of the ecology of the region.
Question is whether they are really wild. These look as docile as any, but remember they roam wild and may not take kindly to your interest in them, especially in the time they are in foal.  And the gentlest looking pony can pack a pretty powerful kick.
Nor should you be tempted to coax them by feeding them.  There is a local byelaw which prohibits feeding of any animal in the Forest and if you are caught by the Forest verderers offering them food you can find yourself facing a fine of up to £200.

Best simply enjoy the tranquility offered by scenes like this afternoon’s view in the sunshine on Canada Common.
