Ben Nevis from Dun Deardail Fort
Wednesday October 12th
Dun Deardail Fort
Today we decided to return to the Braveheart car park to walk to Dun Deardail fort.
Good day for the walk, dry and bright and no hint of rain in the forecast :-)
The fort has a stunning hilltop location with excellent views of Ben Nevis and down to the Glen below.
Most of the walk is on a forestry road which forms part of the latter stages of the West Highland Way.
All that remains of the hill fort is a grassy mound which runs around the top of the hill marking where the vitrified wall ran round the abandoned fort.
Some stones still poked through the grass.
The view across to Ben Nevis was rather special and worth the effort.
We had a picnic lunch in the shelter of what would have been the walls of the hill fort.
Just as we were about to leave a fellow walker appeared.
This walker, who had come all the way from Switzerland, was about to finish her walking of the West Highland Way when she had been attracted by the notice board about the fort and had taken a detour to see the fort.
Unfortunately she was a bit underwhelmed by the fort although she did admire the views.
The return walk was just a retracing of our steps.
Afternoon tea in Fort William before we headed back to Spean Bridge.
My image shows Ben Nevis from the fort. If you look closely you can see the path you can take to reach Ben Nevis from the car park at GlenNevis and my extra shows the commanding views of the valley below from the site of the fort.
