Diary of an Edinburgher

Those hats again!

JR's energy never fails to amaze me (or perhaps it's my lethargy that amazes me). When we came home yesterday, I relaxed all evening on the sofa. JR did a washing, went out to the supermarket (she only had 10 minutes as it closed at 8pm) then came home and baked a cake!

The cake was for Bailey's mum's birthday. Yay! An excuse to get those birthday hats out again! What fun. The dogs (and the humans) are getting so used to them, Bailey didn't even protest, but sat patiently. They (the dogs) all had miserable little faces, it must be said...

We had a make-your-own-sandwich with lots of yummy fillings, followed by the much anticipated poffertjes the scrumptious wee pancakes things I had in Holland. My Dutch pal had brought me the special pan, and a box of the special mix, so there was no excuse. And nothing could go wrong...

The first lot were too small, so that when they were kept warm in the oven, they turned into crisp little biscuits, the next lot were too big and I couldn't turn them over and they stuck to the pan and had to be scraped off. The next lot burned on one side and were uncooked on the other, and the last lot looked almost as they should. But I camouflaged them with plenty of icing sugar, and everyone politely tucked in and made appreciative noises.

There is still a jug of the mixture left, so I may have another go tomorrow...
