Oiling The Joints.
Swans are the ultimate preeners among birds and spend a good part of their day at it all year round. The preen gland at the base of the tail, produces an oily wax which the swan spreads through it's feathers. It keeps them flexible, helps to waterproof and retain heat and moisturizes the bill.
