Bowood 2016 #14 (Thursday 26th May 2016)

I'd been deterred from going back to Bowood because of the queuing issues that had led to me not gaining entry at my last attempt on May 5th. Consequently I hadn't been there for well over a month. Nothing had changed regarding admission procedures but luckily there hadn't been a queue and so I was able to amble down to the Lake, which was as still as a mill pond. A heron lurked on the bank opposite and one of the swans was just visible at the southern end of the lake beyond the grounds. A couple of pairs of Canada geese now had broods of goslings, some on the Lake and some on the grassy bank of Lake Field.

It was warm and sunny and I spent half an hour on a bench in the terraces in front of the house reading Mojo magazine. A couple of RAF planes flew low over the lake on a training exercise (I hope).

Chér - I Go To Sleep (recorded 2 July 1965, Gold Star, Hollywood CA)
At Bowood I was reading an extensive article on the Kinks. Coincidentally I had just been playing a disc from The Kinks Anthology 5CD box set and had got Kinked!, an anthology of Kinks songs recorded by other people between 1964 and 1971, for my recent birthday.
The article said that Ray Davies had written I Go To Sleep as a lullabye on the night of his daughter's birth. He demoed it on his own on 24 May 1965 and sent the song to Peggy Lee, who put it out as a single in August 1965. By then, Davies' manager had given the song to Chér during the Kinks' disastrous US tour, and she had recorded it for her solo album All I Really Want To Do just before going to England with Sonny Bono (and Davies' manager) to promote their I Got You Babe single. Her solo album was released in October.
In the UK, the Applejacks had released their version of the song in August 1965 but it had flopped. Chér's version kept the song alive until Chrissie Hynde recorded the song in 1981 for Pretenders II and had a big hit with it. The Kinks never recorded or performed the song.
