Abbey Ruins
I thought it about time I submitted an entry to the Derelict Sunday challenge, so headed over to Waverley Abbey near Farnham. Though not strictly derelict, it is certainly ruinous. I was a bit perturbed though to see evidence of what seemed to be a rather large building programme about to start in the surrounding fields. However, a note on the English Heritage website noted that the site is to be closed "for filming from 11th April until June" - panic over!
Waverley Abbey is thought to be the first Cistercian abbey in England and was founded in 1128 by William Giffard, Bishop of Winchester. It closed in 1536 as part of King Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, and largely demolished, with its stone was reused in local buildings.
I decided to give my fisheye lens another outing to get a wide shot of the cellarium with its missing roof. The extra shows the remains of the monks' dormatory. Both shots have been given the "Nik Collection" treatment: Google's collection of photo editing tools, which includes the popular Silver Efex Pro for B&W editing, is now free to download.
