Spanish bluebell

The Spanish bluebell Hyacinthoides hispanica is a spring flowering bulbous perennial commonly grown in gardens. It can be distinguished from our beautiful native bluebell Hycainthoides non-scripta by the fact that the flowers of the Spanish bluebell are shorter and more open in nature and arranged all around the central stem. The longer flowers of our native bluebell are arranged along one side of the stem only, giving a distinctly 'drooping' appearance.
Sadly the Spanish bluebell is more vigorous than our beautiful native, and often takes over. Luckily around where I live in Sussex we have wonderful native bluebell woods, and this intruder was happily confined in my Mum's garden.
