Cruel?

I was sorting out the feeders this afternoon – a very good sign that I should be doing something else! I took down and washed out the nyjer seed feeder and binned the other seed feeder because it simply wouldn't come apart for a good cleaning. The nyjer seed feeder is a big unit and has screwable thingamabobs which means that it can be stripped down and sorted out properly. Having done this I restocked the fat balls and hung up one of the coconut fat things and then it struck me! How cruel is this? 

There are migrant birds which nibble on a coconut packed with tasty and nutritious fat who then fly to sunny climes and wonder why the coconuts there aren't the same. Imagine their shock and disappointment, picture their little beak’s turned down in frustration. Cuckoos wandering into a shop in Africa during the winter migration and asking for a coconut will be gutted to find, when they get it open, that it’s full of water. A hobby, having had a busy day chasing swifts across the veldt, might fancy some tasty fat and head for a coconut tree only to be dismayed. Perhaps it's rather like going on holiday abroad. The sign outside promises a full English but when it arrives it's just not right - speck und spiegelei with weißwurst, or bacon, egg and chorizo or even, and this is the barmiest, bacon with pancakes and maple syrup. Maybe our avian friends know this and take a pack-up or stick with the local cuisine or simply make do - I think someone needs to do some research on this.

Obviously we need to carry on offering the fat-filled coconut shells but I think we need to display disclaimers; in fact I'm surprised the EU haven't insisted upon this. Perhaps a notice explaining that real coconuts are not formed in this way?
