800 years -
since Bingley got it's market charter from King John.
It was granted in 1212 and at the time Bingley was the biggest town in the area, getting it's market charter more than 40 years before nearby Bradford.
The cross with it's 5 steps is thought to date from this time. The rest was probably built in the 18th century after Bingley was granted a second charter by William and Mary in 1693.
It was interesting that I should decide to photograph this today whilst I was in town as on the lunchtime news it said that York was today celebrating 800 years of obtaining it's Royal Charter from King John. Apparently he didn't sign the charters as he was illiterate so used the royal seal.
I have photographed this before in full Here but thought a close up was appropriate in this anniversary year.
