Long ride to Mara - moonrise

We were told it was a long bumpy ride to Mara. Well, bumpy was the understatement! It was atrocious. The tarmac ended 3 hours before arriving the the road was so bad our excellent leader called Robert had to drive on the wrong side and carefully negotiate around the huge ruts and bumps. Not surprisingly our mini bus broke down with a suspension and fuel leakage problem, after one almightly bang. We were stranded for what turned out to be 3 hours, on the side of the road, whilst a mechanic who arrived really quickly on a motorbike, did a temporary repair, and then drove the vehicle about 100 metres further to fix it a bit more with welding and stuff. At the side of the road, we watched school children walking home from a nearby school, and young children tending to their flock of sheep.

We arrived at the our campsite at about 8pm, after dark. A lovely welcome drink, and we all greet everyone with 'jambo' for hello! I don't need the welcome drink as much as I need the toilet! The guard is happy to escort us desparate travellers to the toilet in a zip up tent! We have a large walk in tent, and guards escort us to and from our tents after dark to the main resaurant tent, to keep us safe from any dangerous animals! There is electricty in our tent, a normal toilet, a rug, and a hot water bottle in our beds! We have a view of the river, and the night time sounds of hyenas are amazing to hear! The late 3 course meal they provided for us was excellent! Ladies were served first!
