inspired by dedication and resilience
We had read that Nick and Ana Jones had put Little Salkeld Mill on the market so we were anxious to visit the cafe while it was still in their safe hands. They bought the mill in 1974 as a lifestyle choice, claiming it to be realistic rather than romantic. They are passionate about organic flour and Ana teaches breadmaking to a variety of groups. Take a look at their website to see what else they do.
As visitors, it certainly feels more romantic than realistic. We parked the car in the yard and strolled past the ducks and hens, vegetable garden and washing line in the orchard. The door into the cafe was open and Sally and Cath were quietly preparing cakes and soup. The scones were already cooked - apricot and almond today. While we were waiting for the coffee to brew, Adrian picked up the latest newsletter.
With tongue in cheek, Nick had called it 'Special Monsoon Season Newsletter'. Exactly a week ago, the heavy rains had caused severe flooding. Sandbags were inadequate to stem the floods of water that rushed into the cafe from three sides. The millrace was also seriously damaged. Miraculously, the tearoom was ready for business by 11.00am the next morning and the mill was back in action one day later.
.......and there they were, this morning, serenely mixing dough and rolling pats of butter. No wonder Nick describes their lifestyle as realistic. I hope there is someone prepared to carry on where they leave off.
