inspiration all around us

inspired by a Plaster Technician

I stubbed my toe over a week ago and became impatient with my slow recovery so went to my doctor on Tuesday to have it checked out. She sent me to Westmorland hospital for an x-ray. The doctor there thought it was a hairline fracture along a metatarsal. Two and a half hours later, I came out on crutches, plastered up to my knee and an appointment to see the specialist today in the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

The waiting room was a bit grim. No chance of a good blip there. Eventually I saw the specialist who wanted to see the foot without the plaster on. Clutching my instructions, I was ushered into the Plaster room and in no time at all, the plaster was in pieces on the floor. The specialist came and declared there was no break, just torn tissue. He prescribed a much smaller plaster and left the room.

The technician then worked his magic. I chose pink on the spur of the moment and in no time at all, his deft hands had padded, wound and moulded a unique work of art on my right foot. He must produce dozens of casts every week in all shapes and sizes and for all different parts of the anatomy and yet he had time and energy to treat me as a special person.

He gets my gold star of the week.
