inspiration all around us

inspired by knitting wool

Another rainy day. Just right for knitting. I bought this wool yesterday at Little Salkeld Mill. It feels so soft and cosy. The label says it is 'wool from Suffolk sheep living at the Watermill. Spun in Cornwall....sheep registered biodynamic

Biodynamic sheep? That needs Googling.

Patrick Holden, Director of the Soil Association, describes it as 'organic farming with a spiritual dimension'. Rudolf Steiner the Austrian philosopher, social reformer, architect, and esotericist gave a series of lectures in 1924 on 'an ecological and sustainable approach to agriculture'. The biodynamic movement was established in the following year.

We used to visit a Rudolph Steiner centre in Aberdeen called Newton Dee. The campus includes homes and workshops for people with special needs, a cafe serving soup, bread and cakes made on the premises, a grocery shop selling organic goods and vegetables from their own garden and a gift shop which included toys and furniture made in their workshops. We always came away from Newton Dee with the same 'feel good' factor as we did yesterday after leaving Little Salkeld Mill.

It is this passion for a sustainable and caring lifestyle that I find so inspiring. My garment will be a very special one.
