The Old Forge (Wednesday 18th November 2015)

There was a note from my next-door neighbour at Turnpike Cottage on the mat this morning that read, "We're having a new boiler fitted today. Just wanted to FYI in case they need to access the roof via your patio area. Thanks".

As I read it, a clanking of metal poles and an electric screwdriver started up about a foot from my kitchen window as a scaffolding crew on my property began work on my neighbour's wall, which overlooks my front yard. It was the first I had known of it. Neither they or British Gas had contacted me before occupying the area. You can see one of them attaching the new flu on Turnpike Cottage's kitchen roof. Escape was impossible as the scaffolding truck was blocking my car at the top of the drive, and the noise lasted until this afternoon.

Apparently I can expect a repeat performance tomorrow when they take it all down again.

P.S. My neighbours came to speak to me when they returned from work this evening, and said they were ahgast to see the scaffolding in my yard. Apparently, they had expected it to be on a different wall, and were very apologetic, so it's all good.

Bessie Banks - Go Now (recorded 4 December 1963, New York NY)
While this boiler work was going on I was attempting to write a review of a CD called The Red Bird Girls - Very First Time In True Stereo (link to the review on Amazon), featuring girls and girl groups on the Red Bird label, based in New York.
One of the tracks on it is Bessie Banks' original version of Go Now, released in January 1964 on Leiber and Stoller's Tiger label subsidiary. It did not chart except in the R&B charts but the Moody Blues version featuring the lead vocal of Denny Laine, released in November 1964 for Decca in the UK and in January 1965 in the US, was huge, spearheading the Birmingham branch of the British invasion.
It led to the re-release a couple of months later of this Bessie Banks version, unfortunately still to little chart effect. Produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the stereo mix really brings out her vocal performance and that of the impassioned back-up vocals by the Sweet Inspirations featuring Dee Dee Warwick and Cissy Houston.
