Marvin Gaye - Mojo Hannah (recorded 8 January 1963)
Marvin Gaye's 1963 album Recorded Live - Marvin Gaye On Stage had a live version of this song, originally recorded by Motown artist Henry Lumpkin in 1962, but this studio recording, presumably intended to be a single during the year, was not released. It's now on an Ace compilation called Satisfaction Guaranteed - Motown Guys 1961-1969, which is where I heard it.
Henry Lumpkin's version went nowhere but a cover by Little Esther Phillips was a sizable success and led to many more versions that did well on the Northern Soul circuit - Tami Lynn, Betty Harris, Aaron Neville and others.
