Bowood 2016 #36 (Friday 18th November 2016)
I was a bit stir crazy after several days of drab, rainy skies so when a trace of blue appeared in the sky after lunch I was off to Mile Elm to do the public footpath walk up to Bowood Lake. Of course, the sun soon disappeared and it was raining by the time I began to make my way back, but it was good to be out with my camera and I saw a few interesting sights.
The least welcome of these was a shoot going on, probably of pheasants but possibly grouse as I also saw a number of these on my last walk there. More positively I think I saw a kestrel flying onto a branch, a heron took off and flew above the lake and a cormorant flew in the other direction and settled in a tree top. On the way back I had clear views of three magnificently flying red kites. There was lots of autumn colour and a flock of grazing sheep, too, and best of all I got a distant shot of a bird of prey that didn't look quite right for a buzzard or red kite (despite an apparently forked tail) and looking at the picture it may be something else - as yet unidentified...
I veered from the right of way to another path, used by anglers and dog-walkers, so getting a different vantage point for this slightly illicit view of Bowood House, now closed for the winter.
