Not-so-light fantastic

A slow start to the day after I stupidly took a pill (just a quarter of one) after waking at 4 a.m, which left me zonked for the rest of the day. HH had been up for ages by the time I surfaced. Then came the reunion with the dogs. We asked the caretaker to bring them up one at a time, to give me a chance of staying on my feet  (we thought it expedient from HH to remain behind closed doors).  Then, to defuse them, I drove off with the hounds following, on our usual route. They were flat-out exhausted by the time we got back, having had virtually no exercise for three months.

Meanwhile, the St Andrew Society of Rio de Janeiro (with lots of ‘honourary’ Scots co-opted from far and wide) was battling with the Macaé Oilmen’s Golfing Association in the annual golf match (the SAS won – hooray)! HH and I went along after lunch to socialize – first visit to the club in three months.  We were delighted to find Iain MacPhail and Stuart Forbes, of the famous Iain MacPhail Scottish dance band, already there and tucking into an ample lunch in preparation for the evening’s festivities. Also a sea of golfers in navy polo shirts emblazoned with the Saltire (never has it graced so many non-Scottish chests!), donated by IRM Services, who also sponsored the dinner in the evening. It was really good to see so many people from Macaé, which is a good long drive away, particularly as so many people have left due to the downturn in the oil industry, together with the disgraceful problems in Petrobras, the Brazilian state-owned oil giant.

We received a warm welcome from people who have been following HH’s saga and were delighted to see him back on his feet – hugs all round (not very Scottish)? Then back home, where I had a short nap after taking the dogs for their second walk – they had just about stopped panting after the morning’s efforts.

Back to the club for the ceilidh, and a great party it was. HH even took to the floor for the Gay Gordons, and kept his feet even when cannoned into by over-excited dancers.
