The further east you go in East Lothian the drier it becomes. ( It did not rain on us today at all - although Joppa was awash when we got home!)

The higher up North Berwick Law you climb  three facts emerge :

1. The body mass index of fellow spectators declines dramatically.

2. The prevalence of English accents increases.

3. The view of the Red Arrows is incredible.

Later, on Gullane Beach we watched the graceful arcs of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and  heard the deafening roar of the Typhoon.

Even later from the longest herbaceous border in Scotland at Direlton Castle we watched the Royal Jordanian display team give and aerial accent to the horticultural paradise that snuggles behind the stone walls of this ancient fortress.

All this on a day when the Turkish Air Force joined forces with the USAF to rain bombs on so called Islamic State and Kurdish separatists in eastern Turkey,
