Witch trial

Today there were lots of people dressed up in the costumes of 1697 in Paisley. They had an enactment of the trial of people accused of witchcraft. Christian Shaw of Bargarran house accused a maid of stealing when she drank a glass of milk. Her mother reprimanded the maid but later Christian who was 11 accused her of witchraft along with 20 other people (farmers etc). She said they were tormenting her and started having fits.

They were brought to court eventually and 7 found guilty and executed. They were buried at a crossroads underneath a horseshoe which is still there. (unable to see it as it is a very busy crossroads). One of the streets leading to it is called Green Gallows Street.
