The other side of the Solway

When they tell you that they need cut off your electricity and it might be from 8.30am to 5pm, the best thing to do is to go out for the day. That’s what we think anyway. So, as the vans and heavy-lifters and everything else arrived in the village from all corners to do goodness knows what (shouldn’t they actually say what they are going to do!) at 8.30 this morning, we headed out.

We made for what looked to be the sunniest place – South West Scotland - our favourite place anyway. Coffee and scones at New Abbey and then on to Southerness Point. We walked along an almost deserted shell and sand beach for a long, long way. Great, if hazy, views across the Solway to the Lake District hills. (Here you can just see the outline of Skiddaw.) Absolute bliss in the sunshine.
 
We discovered a very pretty secluded beach and a quite spectacular natural arch. Then we went away from the coast and followed little roads and avenues to the John Paul Jones Cottage. Ice cream in the garden, but we didn’t feel inclined to actually visit the museum.
 
The walk we were following had a return route on roads. We decided against that and returned the way we had come – another almost deserted beach walk – in the sun.  ! A brilliant day.
 
And what have they done – no idea, but the power is on!
