This morning I went to a fascinating lecture in Newcastle about Viking and Anglo-Saxon engineering skills and techniques (by my hero Max Adams of course!) There was a lot of focus on Viking boat-building brilliance, but he also illustrated other aspects of construction in the Viking period, for example the way in which monastic communities learnt how to build the most sophisticated corn mills.
In the afternoon we had a quick visit somewhere else. And it was surprisingly quick, as there was hardly anyone else there.
Viking skills in working with wood and this picture - there is a link somewhere - or maybe there isn't.
Dull all day in the North East - now back home it is really raining.
