Ant-mimicking Fly
(Micronevrina sp., Family Tephritidae)
A very small (5mm or less) fly with colourful eyes and black and white speckled wings. I saw it doing an unusual thing with its wings – waving them about, quite independent of each other, when it came across a tiny moth. It gets the name ant-mimicking because of this – the black and white patterns make it look like a number of aggressive ants (apparently – it didn't give me that impression, but then I'm not an insect!) I was just struck by it's lovely eyes.
